GDC Technology to launch IAB Cinema Solution Q3 2020

Hong Kong, July 23, 2020 — GDC Technology Limited (‘GDC’), a leading global provider of digital cinema solutions, announced today that the collaboration with DTS, Inc. to deliver a DTS:XTM IAB solution is on schedule. The solution is designed to fully support SMPTE’s immersive audio bitstream (IAB) standard ST 2098-2. As part of the process to rollout IAB, GDC and DTS jointly demonstrated the DTS:X IAB cinema solution to Hollywood studios and industry stakeholders in February 2020 in Los Angeles. This month, GDC correctly rendered full-length motion picture content mixed in the current immersive sound formats with its IAB solution in a theatre auditorium.

Why Is DTS:X IAB solution Important?

  • The cinema industry is in the process of standardizing Immersive Audio to make it more cost-efficient and accessible to cinema owners. With SMPTE’s IAB format, only one immersive audio DCP is required to playback immersive audio in theatres
  • SMPTE’s IAB reduces the time required during the content post-production process and streamlines theatrical distribution
  • Support for SMPTE’s IAB promises to bring even more immersive content to the big screen worldwide
  • The DTS:X IAB rendering solution reflects DTS’ ongoing commitment to support its global theater network that has built, installed, and implemented DTS:X
  • Adoption of the SMPTE IAB standard will enable immersive audio content to flow seamlessly into DTS:X and related ecosystem encoders and decoders

“Our collaborative development with DTS to complete the IAB project is nearing the end. As cinemas prepare to reopen, we are preparing to roll out the DTS:X IAB solution on schedule”, said Dr. Man-Nang Chong, founder, chairman, and CEO of GDC Technology Limited. “Industry standards are most important when they can help the industry make progress.  Digital cinema standards for image dramatically improved the quality.  SMPTE’s standard for immersive sound will enable audiences worldwide to experience the highest quality audio. GDC and DTS are committed to implementing the DTS:X IAB solution into GDC’s cinema products to theatres worldwide in Q3 2020.”

“DTS is pleased to work with long-time collaborator, GDC, and our content and exhibitor partners to add Immersive Audio Bitstream (IAB) to the DTS:X ecosystem. We look forward to collaborating with stakeholders to rollout IAB to theatres worldwide as we seek to accelerate the adoption of the DTS:X IAB solution throughout 2020,” said Loren Nielsen, Vice President Content & Strategy, Xperi Corporation.
