Sonic Equipment Company Uses GDC New FIPS Level 3 Certified IMB and SX-2000 Server in Dodge City, KS Conversion

CINEMACON, Las Vegas (March 28, 2011) – Sonic Equipment Company has recently converted the Village 8Cinemas in Dodge City, KS to digital cinema using the GDC Integrated Media Block (IMB) and SX-2000 server. The conversion is the first for Sonic using the latest in server technology. The Village 8 is also B&B Theatres first theatre equipped with GDC’s newest product.

GDC’s Digital Cinema Server with IMB seamlessly integrates with all Series 2 DLP Cinema ® Projectors. TheSX-2000 server with IMB provides the highest quality 3D playback with 12-bit 4:4:4 output images (left and right), allowing for a much fuller color spectrum, 500 times richer than that of a legacy server. This server has been awarded the first Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 3 validation certificate (meaning GDC’s IMB meets the highest level of DCI security requirements for protection against malicious hacking, infringement and theft of digital content), with up to 4TB storage (optional), USB 3.0 interface (optional) and 3D live support, the IMB is shaping the future of cutting edge digital cinema equipment.

“We are delighted to say that we have forged a reliable and synergistic partnership with Sonic whose expertise and relentless efforts have yielded mutually beneficial and measurable results in the U.S.,” said Dr. Man-Nang Chong, founder and CEO of GDC Technology. “GDC’s continuous technological innovations, including our state-of-the-art IMB technology and our unbending commitment to deliver the highest caliber products in the industry, have won us many fans worldwide. It is an honor to be entrusted by such a visionary company as B&B Theatres in the continued roll-out of their digital cinema conversions.”

“Sonic has been at the forefront of the digital wave since its inception. We chose the IMB model for the Dodge City conversion because Sonic is going to stay ahead in the industry and the IMB is a step in that direction,” said Mike Covey, Production Director at Sonic Equipment Company. By looking ahead to the future of cinema, Sonic was able to step in and help independent exhibitors convert their cinemas at the beginning of the digital cinema wave, when many thought the independents would have to wait. Since 2009, Sonic has fully converted 40 locations, including a few new theatre projects. Outside of those numbers are several partially converted locations with plans to fully convert in the future.

Sonic has plans to use the new IMB and SX-2000 servers from GDC in future conversions for B&B Theatres.
